Audio-Technica ATH-CKM55 In-Ear Headphones Short Cord

20 08 2009

On August 21, 2009, Audio-Technica will release an upgrade model for the best selling ath-CKM50. The new ath-CKM55 looks almost the same as the CKM50. Even the color version offering are almost identical. The CKM55 took out the (no one wanted) Blue and replace it with a Silver. And that is it?

CKM55

With everything almost the same, the CKM55 has a new thing inside the unit. There is a stabilizer design between the driver unit and the housing in order to minimize unnecessary vibration in the headphones. As a result, the new headphones will sound better than the previous CKM50. That will need some real person listening to see if it is true. But anyway, it is the upgrade replacement for sure. Available in 5 different colors, Black, Gold, Red, Silver and White.

Here are the Specs of the ATH-CKM55

Audio-Technica ATH-EP700 Musician use Monitor Headphones

20 08 2009

On August 21, 2009, Audio-Technica will release a new pair of headphone for musician monitor use, the Audio-Technica ath-EP700. It will be in two colors combinations, dark grey with brown and with orange. Well the orange name is the direct translation from the Japanese color naming, I named it copper orange. Not sure if it is correct though. Will need to see the real thing and decide if I have to adjust the name.

EP700

So why is it so new? And how can it made for musicians? Well according to the official information (well again, I can read some Japanese and that is my understanding from the content), the headphone is specially tuned to a balanced full range from high to low sound for musician monitoring their performance… when they are actually performing! Yeah, that is the idea.

The wire is specially made to one side with a 45 degree to he back to make sure the wire will not obstruct the musical performance.

EP700-01

From the content I read, it said the headphone is also specially tuned for musical instruments like keyboards and so. Will really need some more inputs from someone actually listened to it after the release.

The ath-EP700 is an open air type headphone with a 40mm driver unit. The body is also made to an ultra light weight for long time wearing comfort. The earcups can also lay flat like the ath-ESW9 or ath-ES7 for easy portability. The cord length is at 2 meters long. Available in 2 different colors, Dark grey with Brown and with Copper Orange.

Here are the Specs of the ATH-EP700
Specially tuned for musical instruments
Foldable design lay flat for easy portability
Open air dynamic type
40mm Driver Unit
Sensitivity: 103dB/mW
Frequency: 20-20,000Hz
Impedance: 47 ohms
Maximum input: 1000mW

Sony MDR-NC33 Noise Canceling (Cancelling) Headphones

25 07 2009

1002715

Recently Sony announced three models of noise canceling headphones. The top of the line (that actually reads most expensive :0) MDR-NC600D over headband type, the chrome colored shinny and fancy MDR-300D canal type, and the very easy for your bank account MDR-NC33 canal type.

MDR-NC33-01

Obviously, the NC33 is the upgrade model of the best selling MDR-NC22. So what have been upgraded and is the new one better than the previous model?

After I read whole bunch of Japanese from the Sony Japan website, there are 3 major upgrades on the NC33 from the NC22. First of all, the very important noise canceling efficiency has been up from 75% previously to 90%. Although not as impressive as the 300D or the 600D, but definitely good enough for this affordable canal type NC headphones.

MDR-NC33-02

Secondly, the battery life has been doubled from 50 hours to 100 hours which is very impressive for the one AAA battery operated headphones.

At last the canal type earphone has been upgraded from a horizontal placement to a EX300SL or EX500SL type vertical placement. Although they are both using the 13.5mm driver unit, but I really believe the new EX driver unit has been used and the music reproduction will have to be greatly enhanced comparing to the years old NC22.

MDR-NC300D-01

The bad thing about it is that it is only available in Japan currently. I am not sure when it will be here in Hong Kong, but anyway we can get it from Japan as special orders. Well…. Since we will be getting a few MDRNC33 from Japan by next week, if you guys would like to check out the unboxing and initial impression, then stay tuned.

MDR-NC600D-01

Here is the Spec for the Sony MDR-NC33
Noise Canceling Function
In-ear, closed dynamic type
13.5mm CCAW driver unit
Sensitivity: 98dB/mW (Power On), 99dB/mW (Power Off)
Frequency: 10 – 22,000Hz
Battery operated. (1 x AAA)
Operable up to 100 hours
1.2m in length OFC cord
Gold plated stereo mini plug. Gold plated L – type extension cord is also included

Audio-Technica CKS50 Dynamic Solid Bass In-Ear Headphones – Unboxing and Initial impression

14 07 2009

A few days ago, our ath-CKS50 Dynamic Solid Bass in-ear type headphones finally came from Audio Technica Japan. A few of them got shipped out to fulfill our customer orders. Then I asked for my demo unit for try-on and photo shooting on our official Blog and Facebook.

The new bass focused in-ear headphones ath-CKS50 and CKS70 are very similar. Even the driver unit sizes are the same 12.5mm. The more expensive CKS70 are told to have a stronger magnet and CCAW coil to produce better sound quality.

cks50-01

The package is new, unlike those CK300M designs before.

In the package, we have got a leather-looking carrying pouch, 4 pairs of ear pieces in XS, S, M, and L sizes, and a warranty certificate for Japan only. The carrying pouch has those metal spring kind of opening, sort of like those old time coin bags. You squeeze the top of the case, it opens up. You release it then it closes up. Kind of convenient that everything can be done in one hand.

cks50-02

The new metallic rim design with the large 12.5mm driver unit is indeed nicely connecting to the earpiece. Unlike the Sony EX300SL and EX500SL vertically placed driver unit design. The CKS50 and CKS70 are designed in a horizontally angled driver unit placement.

cks50-03

OK, the try-on impression. I use the CKS50 to listen to various kinds of music from my iPod. The bass reproduction is obviously heavy and solid. Comparing to the Sony EX500SL, the sound quality are fairly similar. But when I was starting to listen to heavy bass music, the CKS50 started to sound blurry. It sounds like the bass is stuffed or it has been wrapped by a piece of cloth.

cks50-04

I suddenly remembered that these Solid Bass series Audio-Technica has the Two Position System thing that might help or something. So I picked up the box and trying to figure out how the two position thing works. After some readings, I found out that actually the Two-Position thing needs you to pull the earpiece to an outer position to extend the air duct in the earpiece.

cks50-05

Not as it seems, pulling out the earpiece is not easy. It took me some time to figure it out. I thought there was some easy mechanism built-in, shouldn’t it be? Anyway, after I pull out the earpiece and try again, the headphone sounds a lot clearer. Even the bass sounds better. As adjusting the so called two-position thing is not as easy as it seems, I think I will stick to this longer air duct position to listen to my music.

cks50-06

So far I am happy with the ath-CKS50 going with my iPod. With the similar price tag, I think it will be better than the ath-CKM50 and I am definitely saying goodbye to my ath-CK300M. Not sure how the more expensive model ath-CKS70 will sound. I guess I will try it when I have got a chance later.

Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7b QuietPoint Noise Canceling Headphones – Unboxing

6 07 2009

On July 3, we have got the first few ath-ANC7b for our photo shooting session. Time is rush, so we can just take whatever we think is good and shoot. Looking at the photo after the editing and I think, well this is not bad at all.

UB ANC7b-01

The box packaging in this upgraded QueitPoint headphone is a lot thinner. Also where is my favorite Audio Technica open window packaging design?

UB-ANC7b-02

When we look inside and pull the inner box out, we know why the box is thinner. Audio Technica is putting the noise canceling headphone inside the included carrying case to pack. So it can save a lot of space. This is also why the open window signature design is gone.

UB-ANC7b-03

The carrying case is relatively hard and made in some fabric kind of material with the silicone Audio Technica logo on it. The design of the case is quite traditionally useful. However comparing to the previously unboxed Sony MDR-NC60’s leather like case, this is simply too traditional … frankly unattractive.

UB-ANC7b-04

Opening up the carrying case we can see the headphones, the carrying case, and the multi-lingual manual.

UB-ANC7b-05

The inside of the case is molded to fit the headphone perfectly. This will ensure maximum protection in your travel. On the left hand side, this is a small detachable pouch for the small accessories.

UB-ANC7b-06

The 1m and 1.5m cord, the 6.3mm plug adapter, the airplane plug adapter and a nice little cute AAA battery is inside. :)

UB-ANC7b-07

OK OK, arranging it in an advertisement kinda look. How is it?

UB-ANC7b-08

The noise canceling intake microphones are located on the front of the two earcups. This is the Audio Technica design. Also the battery is located on the right hand side earcup as well. You can see the push forward design to open the hatch.

UB-ANC7b-09

With a little push of the hatch, the cover will roll open. Then you can put the included AAA battery inside and do some noise canceling tricks. The battery life is at around 40 hours, which is reasonable for any trip.

UB-ANC7b-10

The on-off button and the indication light are located on the left hand side earcup.

UB-ANC7b-11

The earcups are fine tuned in this upgrade to fit bigger size people. So you will find that the whole earcup design is bigger and thicker.

UB-ANC7b-12

A closer look at the thinker earcups.

UB-ANC7b-13

Also the earpads leather material has been upgraded to comfortably fit the ears and to provide better sound isolations.

UB-ANC7b-14

The headband is also wrapped with soft leather material to ensure long time wearing comfort.

If you have read the previous MDR-NC60 unboxing, you can obviously see that the headphone design, packaging and accessories of the NC60 are much more attractive than the ANC7b. But if we look at the noise canceling efficiency, the much bigger and thicker earcups, the sound quality, the ANC7b is obviously a much better choice. Operated by one single AAA battery that you can buy easily anywhere in the world, these are the kind of noise canceling headphone I will prefer to use on my trips.

Here is the ath-ANC7b Spec for your reference.
ATH-ANC7b QuietPoint Noise Canceling Headphones feature ANC circuitry that effectively reduces environmental noise by up to 85%
Closed-back headphones feature large-aperture 40 mm drivers with neodymium magnet systems for deeper bass, extended treble and higher fidelity

Sony MDR-NC60 Noise Canceling or Cancelling Headphones – Unboxing

4 07 2009

Yeah with the new NC600D or NC500D and stuff, I know NC60 is a bit outdated. But looking at the price point and only using one AAA battery to operate, and comparing to the 500D and 600D that needed to charge up for every use. I think the NC60 is more of a user friendly Noise canceling headphone that I will prefer to buy. OK look, you can buy 2.5 NC60 with 1 NC600D…. you get the point?

NC60-01

The box packaging is in a nice looking retailing plastic box. However comparing to the 500D and 600D, you can see that it is made affordable for general average customers.

NC60-02

In the inside, however, it is not bad at all. The MDR-NC60 comes with a very nice leather looking hard carrying case, a strap, and the plug adapters.

NC60-03

The inside of the case is made of velvet material with a small detachable pouch for battery, cord and stuff.

NC60-04

The carrying case has been molded to fit the headphone perfectly to completely protect the headphone when you are traveling with it.

NC60-05

Oh it is brand new! The sticker is still covering the Sony logo. Hahaha…

NC60-06

You can see the small holes in the front of the earcups, they are the noise canceling receivers.

NC60-07

On the right there is a power-on button to turn on the noise canceling function. Ah, to those of you don’t know yet, usually these noise canceling headphones can still function as a normal headphones with the NC function turned off or when it ran out of battery. On the left there is a monitor button, which is to temporary turn of the noise canceling feature to listen to things like announcement in the airport. Or you will miss the flight…

NC60-08

On the right hand side there is a button to open the hatch of the battery compartment for one AAA battery. On the left hand side, there is the plug for the detachable cord.

NC60-09

Oh, I opened the hatch for you guys. See? Just one AAA battery to operate. Light and easy.

NC60-10

The gold plated 6.3mm standard stereo plug adapter and the airplane adapter is included in the package.

NC60-11

The funny design of the Sony airplane adapter is that it can fold into a 3.5mm mini adapter…. But what is it for? Just curious.

NC60-12

The headband and the earcups are made from soft leather materials to ensure the best wearing comforts. Indeed, I had tired it on before and the earcups are covering up the whole ears to provide excellent sound isolation. The music reproduction is very good as well. The 40mm driver units in full size headphones are producing reasonably good music for your everyday listening.

Here is the Spec for MDR-NC60 for your reference:
Noise Canceling Function
Closed dynamic type
40mm CCAW driver unit
Sensitivity: 102dB/mW (Power On), 100dB/mW (Power Off)
Frequency: 14-22,000Hz
Impedance: 40 ohms (Power On), 100 ohms (Power Off)
Output 100mW
Noise canceling more than 16.5dB
1.5m in length OFC cords
Gold plated L-Type stereo mini plug for 1.5m cord
230g in weight included the battery

anc7b-01

Sony DR-BT101 Stereo Bluetooth Headband Headsets – Unboxing

27 06 2009

Sony recently released a couple of series of new stylish stereo Bluetooth headsets at a low price point. The headband type DR-BT101 and hang-on-your-neck type DR-BT100CX. By getting to the lowest possible price, both models dropped every unnecessary thing like the power charging adaptor and replace them with a USB cable. Like I’d said before, the good thing about a USB cable is that you can charge anywhere near a PC. But the bad thing is that if you don’t have a PC, then you will have to figure out yourself.

This time we will show you some unboxing picts for the headband DR-BT101 in Black and Blue color.

DR-BT101 Black and Blue color retail packing

DR-BT101 Black and Blue color retail packing

Unlike the US, the packing we have here in Asia Sony are all in paper packs. Environmentally friendly? Or cost cutting, well, I am not sure. But I like paper packs because it just seems less waste comparing to the big plastic retail case in the US.

BT101-02

Inside the outer box here comes the inner protective brown paper box and the USB cable with warranty guide and multi-language manual.

BT101-03

Take out the paper cover; this is how the headphone is sitting inside. This headband Stereo Bluetooth is very light to put on (officially at 125g) with the semi-transparent blue material on both sides to make it look very cool.

BT101-04

The top black plastic head wrap is adjustable to fit various sizes heads.

BT101-05

Like all the Sony stereo Bluetooths, everything is on the right headphone cup. The microphone to allow you to speak to, the power button, and also the get-the-phone button.

BT101-06

Also showing the right hand side cup, you can see the volume controller and the pairing button. Emm… this is worth to mention, Sony Bluetooths tends to have an extra pairing button for Bluetooth pairings. So next time, don’t try to hold onto the phone button for 5 seconds and complaining no pairing is happening.

BT101-07

The AVRCP rewind and forward controls and the USB charging are also located here on the right hand side ear cup.

BT101-08

Make sure you understand me correctly, on the left hand side ear cup, there is absolutely nothing. See?

BT101-09

At the very first glance, the BT101 looks very stylish and cool to have, especially at this kind of price point, what else do you want? I put it on and it feels like reasonably light and comfortable sitting on my head. Music reproduction is also reasonably good. However, it will be hard for me not to compare it to the similar top-of-the-line DR-BT50, because they are the same headband type Bluetooth from Sony currently.

I did try the BT50 before, as you may figure out already, the BT101 obviously looks inferior. The simple foam ear pat versus the BT50 leather earcup, the foldable design, the leather headband and the finishing… But when you happily take the BT50 to the cashier, and you found out, wow, you can get almost 4 pairs of BT101 at that price.

Yeah, good thing ain’t come in cheap.

Here is the DR-BT101 Spec:
Bluetooth Ver. 2.1 Class 2 + EDR.
Around 10m in possible operation distance.
2.4GHz frequency.
Supported Bluetooth profiles: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Profile), HFP (Hands-free Profile) and HSP (Headset Profile).
Close dynamic type.
Remote control (AVRCP), Play, Pause, Stop, Forward, and Rewind.
Installed rechargeable battery.
3 hours charging time.
Talk time (excluding music playing time) at around 13 hours.
Standby time at around 200 hours.
Weight at around 125g.
Available in 2 different colors, Black and White.

Sony NWZ-W202 2GB Wearable MP3 Walkman – Unboxing

25 06 2009

Sony recently released a new concept MP3 Walkman, the NWZ-W202, which has the earphone attached onto it. Well, it means the whole thing is a neckband type headphone with the 2GB Walkman on it. So they call it wearable Walkman. Yeap, that’s why the W-series.

NWZ-W202 Package

NWZ-W202 Package

Since we have one Black color not yet taken, so I try to open it up for an unboxing photo shoots. Emm… ok ok next time I will choose the hot pink or lime yellow, I know, I know…

Closer look at the Walkman

Closer look at the Walkman

Like all of the recent Sony MP3 Walkmans, the W202 does not come with a charging adapter, instead using a standard USB port to charge up. The good thing about USB is that you can plug in any PC, and do a quick recharge then you hit the road again. The bad thing is… if you don’t have a PC, then you will need to buy those USB to power plug thing. Luckily they are rather inexpensive.

Neckband type wearable design

Neckband type wearable design

The earphone is a 13.5mm EX class one, (I suspect by the look at it -_-!!) is from the MDR-EX300 or MDR-EX500 driver units. As we can obviously see that this Walkman does not have a screen to display information. Of course even if it has, you can’t see them coz it will be at the back of your head. So the W202 is designed like an iPod Shuffle that you can play songs in a (alphabetical) sequence or in shuffle. You can use the jog dialer to control forward and backward.

USB connector and the jog dail

Shuffle button and the 13.5mm earphones

To offer better song sampling ability, Sony has a Zappin system that allows you to sample 4 to 10 seconds with the song’s most exciting chorus part, if you like it, then by a push of a button, you can get it. Sounds pretty good to me.

W202-06

As for on and off, the left and right sides have got a magnet, you zip them up, then the Walkman is off. Ha! How convenient.

The magnet connector design

In the package, the Walkman has it own stylish (yeah Sony) USB charger stand with the mini USB plug to connect to the W202.

The package included a USB stand, the hard protector, and some different sizes ear pieces.

Also the package included a semi-transparent “Eye Shield” kind of plastic protection for the Walkman. Well, I am not sure will anyone really use that.
